Summer in London: an ambiguous phrase. The dates for summer are set, but the weather has a mind of its own. Still, going to London is always a good idea, just be prepared for all sorts of weather conditions!
King Arthur, Merlin, Lancelot, knights and fairies. Who hasn’t heard or read about these legends? The French forest of Brocéliande (la fôret de Brocéliande, Paimpont) is the place said to have inspired these tales. Covering a vast area in the center of Brittany (Bretagne), it is a mystical place that up to the present day still attracts many visitors wishing to feel some of the magic that sprouted from the pages of literary classics such as Wace’s Roman de Rou and poems by De Troyes. I spent a few days there with my husband and an old friend, and was (almost!) transported to ancient times, or at least, it felt like it with no internet!
Ten years ago I went to Kolkata (Calcutta), India, for the first time, on one of my first work-related trips to India. There was a conference I would attend. My stay in Kolkata took an interesting course after I went sunbathing on my day off. Read on to find out what happened.
Every year for our anniversary, my husband and I like to take a city trip in Europe. This time we chose Valencia in Spain. A city known for its oranges, the modern architecture of the City of Arts and Sciences, and its picturesque old town.
“What can you do in Dublin?,” people ask. Well, there’s a few sights, but in my opinion the city is best enjoyed indulging in Irish food and drinks. Especially in fall or winter. When it’s cold outside, there’s no better activity than huddling up in a bar with your friends and a Guinness close by.
What to do on Ibiza if you don’t want to go clubbing (or if you’re 30+ and can no longer be bothered)
Whenever I tell people I’m going to Ibiza on vacation, first thing they say is: “Aha, you’re going to party.” Followed by a sly smirk. No. Au contraire. I’m going to relax.
So what can you do if you don’t want to go clubbing? Plenty.
For a conference I was sent to San Sebastián in Spain, and besides conducting business and stuffing my face with pintxos (Basque tapas), I decided to combine the trip with some sightseeing. One day I had the chance to visit the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
During a recent visit with my mom to the excellent Frans Hals museum in Haarlem, the Netherlands, it occurred to me that still life paintings are the classic version of what we now call ‘food porn’. Why were our ancestors so keen on depicting food on their canvases? Read on for some background.
On a business trip to Montpellier a while back, I had a day off before heading back home and visited Nîmes, a small city half an hour away by train. Nîmes is known for its Roman heritage and there are some very impressive old sites to behold.
Hamburg. The second largest city in Germany after Berlin. Yet it doesn’t seem to be as popular as a tourist destination. I had read about Hamburg being hip and happening in travel magazines, so when I saw a dirt cheap flight offer popping up in my inbox, I grabbed the opportunity and booked a long weekend for me and my boyfriend.
