For a conference I was sent to San Sebastián in Spain, and besides conducting business and stuffing my face with pintxos (Basque tapas), I decided to combine the trip with some sightseeing. One day I had the chance to visit the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.
The bus from San Sebastián to Bilbao takes a little over an hour. From the bus terminal, it’s a twenty minute walk to the museum. It’s hard not to be overwhelmed by the architecture: the museum is absolutely stunning.
I collected an audio tour and followed it both in and outside the building. While I enjoyed the collection inside the museum, I was mostly struck by the building and art works outside of the museum. Jeff Koons’ Puppy keeps watch in front of the museum (see top photo of this post). Also by Koons are the brightly-colored tulips outside.
Another impressive work of art outside of the building is Maman by Louise Bourgeois. A huge sculpture of a spider that is said to be a tribute to the artist’s mother.
Should you find yourself in the Basque Country, the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao is definitely worth a visit. I found it to be an awe-inspiring experience!
